2001 June 28 - Number Four Mountain (Frenchtown)

View

  Moosehead from Number Four Mtn

This 2890 foot mountain is an easy hike and offers spectacular views of Moosehead and mountains. An overlook along the trail provides a view of Spencer Mountain.

  Directions

From Greenville, travel approximately 18 miles north on Lily Bay Road. Turn right on Frenchtown Road (this is a wide and well travelled gravel road and is marked by a sign). Proceed approximately 2.3 miles and turn right. Follow this road and take the first left, which will be about 1.4 miles. Go 0.8 mile to the first bridge. The trail head is 200 to 300 feet beyond the bridge on the left. It is marked by a sign (sign is easy to miss while driving). There is a parking area on the left just before the bridge and another on the right several hundred feet beyond the trail head. Roads OK for travel by passenger car.
  Trail

The trail is easily followed, but use caution on lower portion where some harvesting has occurred. Portions of the trail are marked with flagging tape (mostly blue; some pink and orange. Note: markers are mostly several feet off the trail on the right while ascending). It is about 1.5 miles to the summit with an elevation gain of 1700 feet. Round trip can be done in 2 to 3 hours.
